Effect of self and dual-curing on degree of conversion and crosslink density of dual-cure core build-up materials

Abstract: In comparison of GR and CLF, DC showed no statistical difference in both curing modes. However, dual and self-cured GR has statistically higher Tg values and lower percentage of softening in ethanol than CLF. Polymerization characteristics of dual-cure core build-up composites have superiority in dual-cured mode than self-cured.

“…Since the parameters of the present and previous study [ 22 ] were fairly similar, such large differences in monomer elution from Clearfil-Self and Clearfil-Dual should be attributed to variations in sample preparation, i.e., dosage and mixing of base and catalyst. As expected, these variations were more pronounced in the case of the self-cured than dual-cured material, which is in agreement with the study of Karakis et al [ 36 ]…”

“…The tendency to favor a light-curing mode, as seen in this study, supports prior findings [ 7 , 18 ]. It can be noted that another type of dual-cure resin composite, i.e., luting resin composite, has previously shown a similar tendency [ 19 , 20 ].…”

“…This actually differs from the procedure of polymerization that is typically employed in a clinical situation, where it is being done from one side only. A recent study 30) revealed that in Clearfil DC Core Automix One, the degree of conversion showed no statistical difference between self and dual cured modes.…”
