Freshwater crayfish are among the most important aquatic inhabitants in terms of ecosystem integrity retention. Although Astacus astacus and Pontastacus leptodactylus are characterized by the IUCN as vulnerable and least concern, respectively, Greek official data and local authorities report them as highly endangered or threatened at local levels. Therefore, all freshwater crayfishing activities from the main producing areas in Greece have been forbidden for 1 year since August 2021. Since aquaculture in Greece remains primarily focused on marine freshwater fish, freshwater crayfish aquaculture establishment is expected to provide a promising alternative for regional economic development and a solution to unemployment. Under this prism, the present study represents a comprehensive review of the most important features related to biology, distribution, aquaculture methods, economic importance and research progress considering both stocking perspectives and conservation strategies of those two crayfish species. Recent measurements by local authorities for the protection of the freshwater crayfish populations are described and evaluated. Freshwater crayfish aquaculture is expected to be beneficial for Greece, a country that covers all requirements for this sector. The updated information regarding these two species, summarizing the existing literature towards aquaculture conditions, poses suggestions and presents future perspectives on this field.

Insights on Molecular Mechanisms of Ovarian Development in Decapod Crustacea: Focus on Vitellogenesis-Stimulating Factors and Pathways

Vitellogenesis in crustaceans is an energy-consuming process. Though the underlying mechanisms of ovarian maturation in decapod Crustacea are still unclear, evidence indicates the process to be regulated by antagonistically-acting inhibitory and stimulating factors specifically originating from X-organ/sinus gland (XO/SG) complex. Among the reported neuromediators, neuropeptides belonging to the crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH)-family have been studied extensively. The structure and dynamics of inhibitory action of vitellogenesis-inhibiting hormone (VIH) on vitellogenesis have been demonstrated in several species. Similarly, the stimulatory effects of other neuropeptides of the CHH-family on crustacean vitellogenesis have also been validated. Advancement in transcriptomic sequencing and comparative genome analysis has led to the discovery of a large number of neuromediators, peptides, and putative peptide receptors having pleiotropic and novel functions in decapod reproduction. Furthermore, differing research strategies have indicated that neurotransmitters and steroid hormones play an integrative role by stimulating neuropeptide secretion, thus demonstrating the complex intertwining of regulatory factors in reproduction. However, the molecular mechanisms by which the combinatorial effect of eyestalk hormones, neuromediators and other factors coordinate to regulate ovarian maturation remain elusive. These multifunctional substances are speculated to control ovarian maturation possibly via the autocrine/paracrine pathway by acting directly on the gonads or by indirectly exerting their stimulatory effects by triggering the release of a putative gonad stimulating factor from the thoracic ganglion. Acting through receptors, they possibly affect levels of cyclic nucleotides (cAMP and cGMP) and Ca 2+ in target tissues leading to the regulation of vitellogenesis. The “stimulatory paradox” effect of eyestalk ablation on ovarian maturation continues to be exploited in commercial aquaculture operations, and is outweighed by the detrimental physiological effects of this procedure. In this regard, the development of efficient alternatives to eyestalk ablation based on scientific knowledge is a necessity. In this article, we focus principally on the signaling pathways of positive neuromediators and other factors regulating crustacean reproduction, providing an overview of their proposed receptor-mediated stimulatory mechanisms, intracellular signaling, and probable interaction with other hormonal signals. Finally, we provide insight into future research directions on crustacean reproduction as well as potential applications of such research to aquaculture technology development.

Herbal extracts have been successfully utilized to improve the growth, survival, immunity, and disease resistance of aquatic animals. The present experiment was designed to investigate the effects of dietary acorn extract on growth, survival rate, proximate composition, and haemolymph parameters of narrow-clawed crayfish (Pontastacus leptodactylus). A total number of 360 crayfish (39.17 ± 0.73 g) were randomly distributed into four treatments and fed experimental diets containing 0 (control), 0.5, 1, and 2 g/kg diet of acorn extract for 90 days. The results showed significant improvement in all growth parameters, weight gain ratio (WGR), specific growth rate (SGR), food conversion ratio (FCR), and protein efficiency ratio (PER), as well as survival rate between acorn extract, supplemented crayfish and control with the maximum performance in the 2 g/kg diet of acorn extract (p < 0.05). The dietary acorn extract increased the concentration of total protein, glucose, cholesterol, potassium (K), and calcium (Ca) (p < 0.05). Hepatic enzymes, including alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), were not affected by dietary acorn extract (p > 0.05), suggesting no toxic effect on the hepatopancreas. Moreover, animals fed on dietary acorn extract had higher crude protein and lower crude lipid contents compared to the control group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, our findings revealed that feeding P. leptodactylus with acorn extract at 2 g/kg level significantly improves the growth performance and survival rate, without negative impacts on the health status.
