Effect of SiC and Al2O3 particles on the electrodeposition of Zn, Co and ZnCo: II. Electrodeposition in the presence of SiC and Al2O3 and production of ZnCo–SiC and ZnCo–Al2O3 coatings

Abstract: SiC or Al 2 O 3 microsized particles were added to acid sulfate-based solutions for the electrodeposition of Zn, Co, and ZnCo. Initially, their effects on the electrochemical processes were evaluated. The Zn electrodeposition rate was increased in both SiC and Al 2 O 3 -loaded solutions. The Co electrodeposition rate was also increased by SiC. However, Al 2 O 3 decreased it, especially at the beginning. Both SiC and Al 2 O 3 influenced the electrodeposition of ZnCo positively at moderate loadings. The factors … Show more

“…A variety of nanosized particles, ranging from 4 nm to 800 nm diameters, have been successfully incorporated into metallic electrodeposits (Low et al, 2006). These include oxides such as Al 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 , TiO 2 and Cr 2 O 3 or carbides like SiC, WC, TiC or nitrides like Si 3 N 4 (Bahrololoom & Sani 2005;Jung et al, 2009;Srivastava et al, 2010;Krishnaveni et al, 2008;Stroumbouli et al, 2005;Gay et al, 2001).The metals mostly used are copper and nickel (Low el al., 2006) however other metals like zinc, silver and, alloys have been used (Gomes et al, 2005;Gay et al, 2001;Tulio & Carlos 2009;Muller et al, 2002;Tian & Cheng, 2007). The most studied system has been the Ni-SiC due to its potential technological applications (Low et al, 2006;Hovestad & Janssen 1995;Zimmermann et al, 2002;Hou et al, 2002;Garcia et al 2001;Gyftou et al, 2005;Lekka et al, 2005).…”

“…Silicon carbide (SiC) micro-and nano-particles are of considerable interest as the reinforcing phase [3,4,7,8]. The matrix phase studied so far has been mainly Ni and its alloys [3,[9][10][11][12][13][14], whereas much less has been reported on SiC co-electrodeposition with Zn [15][16][17][18].…”

“…Apart from that, this enrichment in Cu could improve corrosion resistance of the coating. Compositional variation of the metal-matrix in electrocomposite coatings literature is a normal finding [20,21,22,23] and is also now observed for CuZn-graphite form citrate solutions.…”
