Effect of Sintering Parameters and Flow Agent on the Mechanical Properties of High Speed Sintered Elastomer

Abstract: High speed sintering (HSS) is an additive manufacturing (AM) process that creates parts by sintering powder particles using inkjet and infrared (IR) lamp technology rather than laser systems employed in laser sintering (LS). This research investigated the effects o f machine parameters (lamp speed, bed temperature) and the addition o f fum ed silica flow agent on the tensile properties o f thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) parts processed using HSS. The results showed improved elongation at break (EaB) values by … Show more

“…TPE 210‐S parts are widely used in the production of interior automotive applications. In 2015, Norazman et al [ 171 ] studied the influence of the addition of a silica flow agent on the tensile properties of HSS processed TPE parts. The results show that compared with the reported elongation‐at‐break value of LS variant of the same TPE, HSS shows an increase of more than two times.…”

“…Polymeric powders have a tendency of forming agglomerates which increases the difficulty in spreading the powder prior to the sintering process. 23 It was observed that the addition of fumigated silica (CAB-O-SIL) at a 0.2% by weight proportion to poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) led to de-agglomeration and an improvement in the mechanical properties such as UTS and elasticity modulus, while decreasing the EaB. Further addition of CAB-O-SIL led to regression in the improvements made.…”

“…The tensile properties achieved by high speed sintering TPE210-S parts have been shown to be superior to equivalent laser sintered parts and exceed the values specified by the manufacturer. Norazman and Hopkinson (2014) investigated the addition of fumed silica to the powder mix, which further improved the tensile strength, Young's modulus and elongation at break of manufactured TPE210-S parts. Ellis et al (2015a) explored the application of greyscale to produce elastomeric parts with comparable tensile properties.…”
