Effect of sodium selenate foliar supplementation on Cryptotaenia japonica and Petroselinum crispum nutritional characteristics and seed quality

Abstract: Production of functional food with high levels of selenium and other antioxidants is very valuable for human protection against different forms of oxidant stress. Among leafy vegetables parsley demonstrate the highest levels of antioxidants. Biochemical analysis and fluorimetric determination of selenium revealed that foliar biofortification of 4 parsley (Petroselinum crispum) cultivars and Mitsuba (Cryptotaenia japonica) with sodium selenate (25 mg L-1) resulted in the highest biofortification level in curly … Show more

“…On the other hand, attention should be paid to the fact that even the lowest bark AOA values are higher or not different from the correspondent parameters recorded in popular vegetables such as parsley (AOA 44–68 mg GAE g −1 d.w.) [ 17 ], tomatoes (18–23 mg GAE g −1 d.w.) [ 18 ], and onion bulbs (34–58 mg GAE g −1 d.w.) [ 19 ], which proves the expedience of tree bark utilization as a significant source of natural antioxidants. The results presented below are mean values of antioxidant status for bark overall, including the cambium, phloem, and periderm due to difficulties separating these components from rather small tree branches.…”

“…The anomalous Se and heavy metals interaction is typical of a low toxic element concentration in the environment and has already been described for other agricultural crops. Notably, significant increases in Sr and V were recorded in Mitsuba under sodium selenate foliar application [ 54 ], Al, Cr, Ni and V in A. ursinum leaves [ 55 ], and Al, As, Pb and V in Indian mustard [ 56 ]. Further investigations will be useful to reveal the mechanism of the mentioned interactions and highlight the most important peculiarities of these phenomena.…”

“…Nitrates were assessed with an ionomer Expert-001 (Econix Inc., Moscow, Russia) equipped with an ion-selective electrode according to Kharchenko et al [ 43 ]. A total of 5 g/mL of fresh rhubarb juice, pomace and roots were homogenized with 50 mL of distilled water.…”
