Effect of Space Configurational Attributes on Social Interactions in Urban Parks

Abstract: Urban parks are one of the most common spaces for social interactions in modern cities. The design of park spaces, especially space configuration, has significant influences on people’s social behaviors in parks. In this study, the associations between space configurational attributes and social interactions were investigated using space syntax theory. An observation analysis of social behaviors was carried out in two urban parks in Beijing, China. Nine space configurational attributes, including depth to the … Show more

“…The results provide a valuable reference for sustainable urban design and planning on the critical aspects of optimising spatial layout, road segments as spatial units and accessibility to diversified cultural groups. A study on urban parks by Sheng et al (2021) revealed a strong correlation between space type, scale factors and configurational (space syntax) attributes on social interaction behaviours in parks. Personal and social interaction groups have strong negative and positive influences on social interaction intensity, based on the spatial qualities of gardens and the syntactic values of the streets, respectively.…”

“…In space syntax, a "segment map" is established based on a real urban map to represent the urban network configuration. Actual urban spaces are modeled as nodes linked by a road network for the quantitative measurements of space configurational attributes [50]. Considering the situation in the inner city of Haiyan, there is an obvious contrast between the traditional serpentine streets and the circular road along the moat and the newly-built straight roads in urban development, which also leads to the fact that the axis analysis in the space syntax cannot objectively reflect the comparison between these two types of road conditions.…”

“…Leisure and entertainment facilities also largely determined the frequency of visits to the park [ 17 , 18 ]. Furthermore, the park system can be a green network within the city’s sustainable system, which is dynamically related to other components [ 14 ], such as urban functional service facilities, landscape patterns [ 19 ], the city’s crime map [ 20 ], and the relationship between urban parks and sociodemographic variables [ 2 ]. Park [ 6 ] mentioned that parks are, to some extent, fragmented and nonconnected and that these green particles should be woven into the broader ecosystem.…”
