Objectives. Esthetics is an essential issue for the long-term success of composite resin restoration. Therefore, this study aimed to view the esthetics of universal shade composite resin restorations and to assess its color matching before and after bleaching. Materials and Methods. Overall, 40 freshly extracted premolars were mounted in an acrylic resin mold, and Class V cavities were then prepared and restored by OMNICHROMA composite (Tokuyama Dental, Tokyo, Japan) and polished with 2-step polishing system. Baseline color analysis was performed using VITA Easyshade V digital spectrophotometer, and another color analysis was carried out 24 hours after storage in distilled water. In-office bleaching was carried out, and color measurements were taken after bleaching and 2 weeks postbleaching. The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS 26.0 Windows version statistical software. Changes were considered statistically significant at P = 0.05. Results. ΔE value of OMNICHROMA restoration before and after restoration was 6.474, 3.529 before and after bleaching, and 3.651 two-weeks postbleaching. In-office bleaching was effective in bleaching the OMNICHROMA specimens as the restoration showed positive ΔL ∗ values, which indicated that the specimens were lighter in color after bleaching; however, the bleaching effect was not maintained after 2 weeks. Conclusion. OMNICHROMA universal shade composite resin restoration showed different color matching values with the adjacent enamel of class Vs. The material appeared lighter in shade postbleaching, and the color change was not maintained 2 weeks postbleaching.

Effects of Accelerated Aging on Color Stability and Surface Roughness of a Biomimetic Composite: An In Vitro Study

The aim of this in vitro study is to compare the color stability and surface roughness of conventional and self-blending resin composites before and after staining and aging. Three conventional composites (Filtek Z350, IPS Empress Direct, and Estalite Palfique LX5) and one self-blending (Omnichroma) resin composite were used in this study. Sixty discs were prepared and polymerized in a metal mold (n = 15 per group). Samples were then finished and polished by Layan discs. Color testing and roughness testing were measured as a baseline (T0) by a spectrophotometer and profilometry. Samples were then stained with tea for 24 h, water aged for 30 days, and then a second reading (T1) was performed. Finishing and polishing were performed again, and a third reading (T2) was collected. All groups showed significant decrease in all color parameters (L*, a*, and b*); however, after polishing, all groups showed color enhancements matching pre-experiment baseline colors in all color parameters (L*, a*, and b*), except for Estelite Palfique LX5, which showed a significant difference in L relative to the baseline. Furthermore, Estalite Palfique LX5 showed increased roughness after staining compared to the baseline, unlike other groups. No significant differences in color stability were found between self-blending composites and other composite materials. Accelerated aging and staining had minimal effects on the surface roughness of self-blending composite.

Aim: This study evaluated the color stability and surface roughness of four universal-shade resin-based composites after staining and external bleaching with 40% hydrogen peroxide. Methods: Two universal shade resin-based composites and two nanohybrid composites were tested. Twenty disc-shaped specimens from each material were fabricated and divided into two subgroups: one group was stained and bleached (staining group) and the other received bleaching treatment only (control group). The staining group was stained with coffee solution for 24 h. Subsequently, each sample of all four materials was bleached using an in-office bleaching gel using 40% hydrogen peroxide. Color measurements were performed using a spectrophotometer to obtain the International Commission on Illumination parameters, L*; a*; and b*, for each of the following periods: baseline, after bleaching, and two weeks after bleaching for the control group. The staining group was examined at baseline, after staining, after bleaching, and two weeks after bleaching. Surface roughness (Ra) of all the materials after each treatment step were also recorded. Results: Descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations) were used to describe color measurements and surface-roughness values. Two-analysis of variance and one-way analysis of variance were used to compare the mean values of surface roughness, L*, a*, b*, and ΔE values. Statistically significant differences and clinically acceptable ΔE were observed between all materials during the different stages in color measurements, whereas the surface roughness were significantly different for each study material and treatment mode. Conclusion: Staining with coffee solution and in-office bleaching produced acceptable color changes. Increased surface roughness values were observed after staining and bleaching the tested resin-based composites.
