Effect of statins on blood pressure: Analysis on adverse events released by FDA

Abstract: To our knowledge, this is the first pooled analysis on large-scale data of adverse events to identify the BP-lowering effect of statins. The results will contribute to the development of novel statin-based antihypertensive therapies. In addition, the differential effects of individual statins can warrant subsequent research on the underlying mechanisms of BP control.

“…That is why, considering the effect of simvastatin on AAA prevention and the fact that it attenuates the blood hypertension, we suppose that the abrupt blood pressure rise may lead to more severe damage in Nrf2 tKO aortas and trigger aneurysm formation. Of note, the hypotensive effect of statins is well documented [36], recurrently considered a side effect of statin-based therapy. In our experimental setup, however, it seems to have a protective outcome, possibly due to subsequent, rather than antecedent, AngII administration.…”

“…Additionally, statins have been shown to lower BP in experimental and clinical studies 2 . Several studies have shown that statins are beneficial in lowering BP in patients with hypertension because they inhibit 3‐hydroxy‐3‐methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase 3–5 . While statins are primarily known for their cholesterol‐lowering properties, their antihypertensive properties have increasingly gained attention 6 .…”

“…However, these findings have limited power as the studies were not elaborately designed. 12 13 Likewise, a few studies have shown that rosuvastatin, alone or in combination with valsartan, modestly reduced blood pressure. 14 15 In our study, the effect of the rosuvastatin formulations on serum creatinine level was not significant.…”
