Effect of straw reinforcement on the shearing and creep behaviours of Quaternary loess

Abstract: In addition to the shearing behavior of soil, the creep character is also considered crucial in determining the long-term shear strength. This especially holds true for the loess that possesses the metastable microstructure and is prone to landslide hazards. This study explored the potential application of straw reinforcement to enhance the shearing and creep properties of the Quaternary loess. The mechanism responsible for the straw reinforcement to elevate the peak shear strength was revealed. Furthermore, t… Show more

“…The Burgers model, as shown in Fig. 4, can well describe the creep characteristics of the holding pressure stage of agricultural fiber materials, such as corn straw, which consists of a Maxwell body and a Kelvin body in series (Ma et al 2017(Ma et al , 2022Maraldi et al 2018;Xue et al 2021;Wang et al 2022).…”

“…Metallurgical processes, metal smelting activities, and inappropriate wastewater disposal discharge heavy metals into soils and groundwater, hence resulting in serious ecological environmental pollution ( Nakata et al, 2017 ; Vital et al, 2018 ; Bai et al, 2021a ; Bai et al, 2021b ; Bai et al, 2021d ; Xue et al, 2021a ; Xue et al, 2021b ; Wang et al, 2021 ; Chen et al, 2022 ). Lead (Pb) and copper (Cu), that are featured with characters of toxicity, non-biodegradability, and bioaccumulation, are considered two common and dangerous heavy metal contaminants present in surrounding environments, which cause serious threats to plant and human health ( Zhao et al, 2016 ; Jiang et al, 2019 ; Liao et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Moreover, loess is extremely important and covers 630,000 km 2 in China. Clay minerals in loess have complex chemical composition, high specific surface areas, and high negative charge (Xue et al, 2021a(Xue et al, , 2021bDuan et al, 2021;Bai B. et al, 2021Bai B. et al, , 2021b. The forming of water during the EK remediation process can cause the swelling and dispersion of clays in loess toward increasing the thickness of the electric double layer and causing a reduction in the suction (Hu et al, 2021a;Hu et al, 2022a;Wang et al, 2022a).…”
