Effect of Strontium-Doped Bioactive Glass on Preventing Formation of Demineralized Lesion

Abstract: This study investigated the effect of strontium-doped bioactive glass (SBAG) on the formation of dental demineralized lesions. Materials and methods: The study materials were 48 sound human tooth specimens with both dentine and enamel, divided equally into four groups: Group 1 (SBAG), Group 2 (SBAG+Fluoride), Group 3 (Fluoride), and Group 4 (Water as control). After 14 days of pH cycling, the surface morphology of the specimens was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Crystal characteristics of the precip… Show more

“…Although the a-axis of the apatite lattice seemingly reduced after the CIP, this was not significant (P = 0.35; Table ). This is consistent with previous studies in nanoscale materials showing that crystal growth along the c-axis was significantly correlated with the degree of fluoride substitution into the HA (Mei et al 2017;Dai et al 2021). Correspondingly, the representative Raman spectra demonstrated a marked decrease and increase with a noticeable sharpening of the typical phosphate band after etching and CIP, respectively, while the v 1 CO 3 2− peaks were slightly changed compared with before treatment (Fig.…”

“…3E and F). Therefore, this evidence confirmed that CIP treatment enabled the F − substitution into the HA, becoming an FHA, which is in agreement with studies on synthesized HA showing that the increased FWHM and the shifted position of the v 1 PO 4 3− Raman peak are directly associated with an increasing compact and ordered apatite structure (Dai et al 2021).…”

“…Silicon was reported to have a role in the remineralization process of demineralized dentin and enamel following in vitro testing [37][38][39]. Lastly, the presence of strontium is reported to decrease the demineralization of enamel while also impeding the loss of surface hardness in more acidic environments [40,41].…”

“…Magnesium and strontium ions have been added to biodegradable structures for soft tissue regeneration, in enamel repair by inducing differentiation and proliferation of human dental pulp cells, as surface treatment of dental implants to improve the integration of gingival epithelial cells and fibroblasts, and have antibacterial effect for common periodontal pathogens. Some magnesium-based materials promote beneficial mechanical properties with elastic modulus similar to bone and on the other hand, the addition of strontium shows interesting results in the prevention of demineralized lesion formation and on prevention of artificial dentine caries if contained in toothpaste [28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35].…”
