Effect of tacticity of poly(methyl methacrylate) on interfacial region with silica in polymer nanocomposite

Abstract: The effect of tacticity on the interfacial region between poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and silica in a PMMA/silica nanocomposite was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). The glass transition temperature (Tg) values of the syndiotactic (st‐) and atactic (at‐) PMMA/silica nanocomposites are higher than those of the neat PMMA. Conversely, the Tg of the isotactic (it‐) PMMA/silica nanocomposite is slightly higher … Show more

“…The peaks between 1465 and 1043 cm −1 arise from the stretching and bending vibration of C  O, C  C, and C  OH groups respectively. [ 21 ] The FTIR spectra of acrylic‐ co ‐resin (Figure 1(E)) exhibited similar peaks as monomers spectra. The peak related to the CC double bond between 1600 and 1700 cm −1 does not appear, which indicates the synthesis of acrylic‐ co ‐resin (Figure 2).…”

“…The FT-IR spectrum of PMMA (Figure 4b) contains bands located at 2750-3100 cm −1 , which are attributed to asymmetric and symmetric stretching of the CH 3 group. The band at 1730 cm −1 is related to the C=O stretching of carboxyl PMMA [44]. The bands at 1485, 1447, and 1380 cm −1 are attributed to CH 3 deformation.…”

“…1,3 In fact, MMT and other phyllosilicates can act as physical crosslinker to impart stability to the polymer-clay nanocomposites. 4,5 Due to weak layer-layer interaction, polymerizable organic monomers such as AA or sodium acrylate (NaAA) may be intercalated into the interlayer spaces where it reacts with the interlayer cations. 2 As the monomer polymerizes, the clay is exfoliated into the polymer matrix as single layer.…”
