Effect of the Solvent in Enhancing the Selectivity to Furan Derivatives in the Catalytic Hydrogenation of Furfural

Abstract: The catalytic hydrogenation of furfural, particularly to methyl-furan, is studied on four commercial catalysts (based on Ni and Cu and alumina or silica as supports) in different aprotic solvents (nheptane, diisopropyl ether and ethyl acetate) and two Cl-containing solvents (chlorobenzene and n-heptane containing 0.5 wt % CHCl 3 ). The catalytic data are complemented by the estimated solvent characteristics, activity coefficients of reactants (including H 2 ) and products, and energy stability by the solvent o… Show more

“…The main issue with furfural hydrogenation is controlling its reaction route and hydrogenation degree through a selective catalyst [10]. Depending on the process conditions [11], the nature of the catalyst [12], and the type of the solvent [13], furfural hydrogenation proceeds through various pathways and with the formation of a significant number of products. A variety of heterogeneous catalysts mainly based on Pd [14,15], Pt [16], Ni [17], Cu [18], and Ru [19].…”

“…It is well documented that the Cu-based catalysts are more selective toward FOL in a polar solvent medium. 59 The polar solvent is known to stabilize the reactants, products, and intermediates formed in the FAL hydrogenation reaction and favor the formation of FOL. Moreover, different solvents can modify the intrinsic activity of the catalyst and can result in different hydrogenation products.…”

“…Kathryn and co-workers reported the application of a Ni/SiO 2 catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of FF to FA with a selectivity of 50% at a high reaction temperature of 180 • C [14]. In another example, a Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst displayed poor FA selectivity, giving methylfuran (MF), tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and furan (FU) [15]. In another report, Li and co-workers reported the hydrogenation of FF to FA over Ni 3 Fe/SiO 2 , which resulted in 100% conversion of FF with 97% selectivity to FA [16].…”
