Effect of thread tension on mechanical performance of stitched glass fibre-reinforced polymer laminates –experimental study

Abstract: This article presents the results of interlaminar shear and flexural tests of polyester resin – glass fibre laminates made from the preforms unstitched and stitched by various thread tensions: low, medium and high. The laminates were impregnated using resin transfer moulding method. The interlaminar shear and flexural tests were conducted by loading parallel and transverse to the stitch lines. Interlaminar shear strength, flexural strength and flexural modulus were obtained. Deformation extent of the reinforci… Show more

“…The layers, shifting along the radial direction, disturb their own reinforcing strands mainly in this direction and in the section transverse to it. Taking into account the strongly negative effect of even slight deviations of the fibres reinforcing the laminate from the loading axis, 36,42 the load capacity of the laminate section drops very significantly in such a case. Similar behaviour of fibrous reinforcing structures was confirmed in literature.…”

“…Glass fibre preform deformation caused by stitching was studied in literature. 35,36 The phenomenology of the course of the stitched laminate failure was analysed in literature. 37 The study includes the manufacturing process of laminate panels by means of the RTM method on the basis of three types of preforms: plain woven fabric (classic), stitched plain woven fabric and 3D woven fabric.…”

“…który wykazuje lepszą elastyczność i pewną plastyczność, będąc trudniejszy do zniszczenia, w porównaniu z tradycyjnymi betonami (15,16). BP jest polimerową matrycą kompozytową [PMK] wzmocnioną cząsteczkami, która ma wiele odmian obejmujących materiały od powszechnie stosowanych tworzyw ciernych, po zaawansowane technologicznie materiały funkcjonalne (17,18).…”

“…20,21 The piercing size could influence the interlayer shear properties of preform including the number of filament in the stitched yarn and initial stitched yarn tension during stitching process. 22,23 The shear properties of the 3D angle interlock preform were studied by using the picture frame. Sun et al explained that the preform architecture, preform areal density and fiber linear density were critical parameters for enhancing the shear properties of the 3D preforms.…”
