Effect of three-drug delivery modalities on olfactory function in chronic sinusitis

Abstract: In vitro differences in drug deposition pattern between both intranasal modalities were demonstrated. Threshold discrimination identification and RNT were similar between three groups at baseline. Threshold discrimination identification improved by 5.5, 5.8, and -1.1 for sonic nebulization, oral, and nasal spray groups, respectively (P = 0.010). This improvement was clinically relevant for oral and nebulized administration. It was similar between oral and nebulized administration but significantly higher than … Show more

“…SNIFFIN' STICKS-THRESH-OLD. Six studies in CRS mixed 12,14,16,[53][54][55] and two studies in CRSwNP 18,19 presented threshold scores, yielding a population of 386 and 187 patients, respectively. Olfactory dysfunction using the Sniffin' Sticks threshold tests is defined as 6.00 in males and 6.50 in females.…”

“…Interestingly, oral and nebulized corticosteroids yielded equivalent, clinically relevant improvements in objective olfactory measures, which were significantly higher than the standard intranasal formulation. While the latter proved ineffective, the authors noted that the abbreviated duration of therapy (16 days) compared to what is ordinarily employed in clinical practice could have contributed to the absence of effect (Reychler et al, 2015).…”
