Effect of tyrosol on adhesion ofCandida albicansandCandida glabratato acrylic surfaces

Abstract: The prevention of adhesion of Candida cells to acrylic surfaces can be regarded as an alternative to prevent denture stomatitis. The use of quorum sensing molecules, such as tyrosol, could potentially interfere with the adhesion process. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of tyrosol on adhesion of single and mixed cultures of Candida albicans and Candida glabrata to acrylic resin surfaces. Tyrosol was diluted in each yeast inoculum (10(7) cells/ml in artificial saliva) at 25, 50, 100, an… Show more

“…Tyrosol and CHX gluconate alone did not significantly reduce the metabolism of the biofilm cells and number of CFU (Table ), when compared to the negative control. Previous studies have shown that these drugs inhibited both adhesion (2 h) of Candida cells to acrylic surfaces (Monteiro et al , ) and biofilm formation (48 h) by Candida species and S. mutans on AR and HA (Arias et al , ). These discrepancies possibly occurred as a result of the different periods of biofilm growth assessed in the studies.…”

“…The methods used to prepare AR and HA specimens were those reported by Monteiro et al (2015) and Arias et al (2016), respectively. All specimens were also characterized in relation to surface roughness and hydrophobicity (Arias et al, 2016).…”

“…To produce AR specimens, an aluminium matrix with internal moulds was fixed with wax (Wilson, São Paulo, Brazil) on a stainless steel plate and invested in a flask with type III dental stone (Herodent, Petrópolis, Brazil), in accordance with a previously described procedure (Monteiro et al . ). After the setting process, the flask was opened, the wax was removed and the moulds were cleaned.…”
