Effect of Upstream Unsteady Flow Conditions on Rotor Tip Leakage Flow

Abstract: A study has been conducted, using unsteady three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations to determine the impact on rotor performance of the interaction between the stator wakes and rotor tip clearance flow. The key effects of the interaction are: (1) a decrease in loss and blockage associated with tip clearance flow; (2) an increase in passage static pressure rise. Performance benefit is seen in the whole operability range of interest, from near design to high loading. The benefit is modest ne… Show more

“…This is probably due to the interaction between the upstream wake and tip leakage vortex. Analogous phenomenon were observed by Sirakov [21], Mailach [22] and Zhang [23], who drawed the same conclusion in the study. Figure 21 shows axial vorticity distribution on the cross section 85% C x downstream of rotor leading edge at time t ¼ T (only 0.5-1 span showed).…”

“…In addition, tip clearance flow is one of the main reasons of the eddy currents noise within the compressor [3] . In the field of numerical simulation, Freeman carried out two numerical calculations in the condition of two different size of the tip clearance respectively, finding that with the increase of the tip clearance, the compressor pressure ratio, efficiency, stability has fallen [4] .Sirakov and Tan have studied the influence of the vortex trail in the upstream stationary blade's tip clearance and the downstream rotor blade's tip clearance vortex on performance of rotor blades [5] . In this article, a six half-compressor model is established and numerically simulated in order learn the tip clearance flow situation and analyze flow field characteristics.…”

“…Together with progresses made by both the numerical techniques and the test facilities, this *Corresponding author: School of Mechanical Engineering, Iran University of Technology, Narmak, Tehran 16877, Iran. email: taghavi@iust.ac.ir traditional steady approach altered to an unsteady one [9][10][11]. This alternation in numerical approach has been an essential task, since the tip leakage flow can cause one of the most important phenomena in axial compressors, namely rotating instability, to occur.…”
