Effect of urolithin A on the improvement of vascular endothelial function depends on the gut microbiota

Abstract: BackgroundUrolithin A (UA) is a metabolite produced by gut microbiota from ingested ellagic acid. Although the effect of ellagic acid intake on vascular endothelial function (VEF) improvement has been reported, the effect of UA intake on VEF improvement remains obscure. In addition, UA has been reported to improve the intestinal barrier function, and UA may have improved VEF by gut microbiome alteration.ObjectiveIn this study, we conducted a clinical trial to explore and analyze the effects of UA intake on vas… Show more

“…In the type 2 diabetic mice model, reduced levels of fasting glucose, glycated haemoglobin, interleukins, free fatty acids in serum, and significantly improved insulin-mediated glucose-lowering effects were observed after UA supplementation [36,62]. In healthy volunteers, UA intake enhanced vascular endothelial function that correlated with the alteration of their individual gut microbiota composition [60] (Table 2).…”

“…UA is produced by gut microflora from the transformation of ellagitannins that are found naturally in plants such as walnuts, pomegranates, raspberries, and strawberries [67,68]. UA treatment helps to maintain mitochondrial quality control by stimulating mitophagy and preventing the accumulation of damaged mitochondria [69,70].…”
