Effect of Vaporub on the Restlessness of Children with Acute Bronchitis

Abstract: In this study pneumographs of children with acute bronchitis treated with Vicks Vaporub or Petrolatum were used. Movement artifacts were used as a measure of the so-called "restlessness" of the children. The experimental schedule consisted of a 10-minute phase of recording before a 3-minute treatment with Vaporub or Petrolatum, followed by a 70-minute observation period, during which time pneumograms were also recorded. Thirty-four Vaporub-treated children showed an increase in periods without movement artifac… Show more

“…It has also been found, in the same group of children, that aromatics are effective in decreasing movement artifacts (restlessness). This effect was quite marked and cannot caused solely by psychologic effects of the therapy (Berger et al, 1978b). Reduction of respiratory discomfort was also observed in healthy volunteers following nasal inhalation of l-menthol as a result of stimulation of cold receptors (Nishino et al, 1997).…”

“…However, Cohen and Dressler (1982) demonstrated that acute inhalation of aromatic vapors, including menthol, improved airway caliber in volunteers who suffered from respiratory-tract infections. The treatment of children suffering from acute bronchitis with aromatics delivered by inunction has resulted in decreasing restlessness (Berger et al, 1978b) and easier breathing (Berger et al, 1978a). However, some commercially available decongestant intranasal formulations were found to have ciliotoxic effect (Su and Po, 1993).…”

“…18,19 Most likely through this mechanism, menthol has been shown to improve the nasal sensation of airflow in congested adults with URIs 20 and healthy school-aged children. 21 Compounds that contain menthol and/or camphor have also been shown to reduce respiratory rate and restlessness in children with acute bronchitis, 22,23 reduce evoked cough in healthy adults, 24 and improve mucociliary clearance in adults with chronic bronchitis. 25 …”
