Effect of Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis on Vitreous Depth in Patients with Keratoconus

Abstract: In the current study we showed that VKC-associated KC patients have significantly longer AL and VD when compared with KC patients without VKC. Posterior segment elongation in VKC-KC group may be associated with the type IV collagen destruction due to chronic longstanding inflammation in VKC patients.

“…In some individual studies, the severity of KC was increased in patients with ocular allergy. 1,28 However, subgroup analysis for the severity of eye allergy was impossible due to limited data. Our findings that KC's eye rubbing and family history contribute the most to KC's risk support the argument that mechanical and genetic factors are pertinent to the disease and pathogenesis is multifactorial.…”

“…Additionally, some pathologies, such as atopy and allergies, are often associated in both patients with DS and patients with keratoconus, which may suggest a common genetic alteration. [22][23][24] Moreover, several studies have reported that eye rubbing habit, which is also a common finding in patients with DS and patients with keratoconus, leads to a chronic and maintained inflammation of the eye surface that induces biomechanical alterations of the corneal collagen fibers. 11,[25][26][27] Limitations…”

“…Wang et al reported that alterations in the chromosome 21 from patients with DS might have a genetic variation that affects the corneal collagen fibers and in consequence the biomechanical stability of the cornea.
