<p class="AMSmaintext">Shape and direction of gate in centrifugal casting affected the microstructures and defects in castings. The purpose of this research was to determine the effects of gate shape and direction in centrifugal casting toward on porosity, density, roughness, and microstructures on the artificial lumbar disc model. The main shapes of the gate were circular and rectangular cross-section. The circular cross-section gate shape was used for two different directions of artificial lumbar discs; vertical, and horizontal. Furthermore, the rectangular cross-section gate shape consisted of three different directions; oblique clockwise, oblique counter-clockwise and perpendicular towards the mold. The rotational mold was conducted at a speed of 60 rpm. The results showed that the rectangular cross-section gate shape with the oblique direction same with the rotation of the mold produced artificial lumbar disc model that had the smallest porosity area among the other directions. It was the best shape and direction of the gate among the others which had the smallest porosity area (0,68%), highest density (4,517 g/cm<sup>3</sup>), and smoothest roughness (8,76 µm). In the sub-surface, the microstructure of α-case was formed. The thickness and hardness of the α-case in this design were 50-100 µm and 760 VHN, respectively. Hence, the rectangular cross-section gate shape with the oblique direction same with the rotation of the mold was appropriate to be applied in the manufacture of an artificial lumbar disc model.</p>

Computer modeling using a commercially available software package was used to explore the optimization of filling systems based on the relatively new concepts of avoiding entrainment of air bubbles and oxides by avoiding surface turbulence. The test casting was based on a pattern for a traditional top poured test bar, whose cross section was a tri-lobed clover-like shape. The study illustrates clearly that the detailed design of the filling system has a major influence on the conditions for defect generation during filling. Traditional steel casting systems using the widely popular assembly of preformed refractory tubes were found to behave poorly. Systems were demonstrated which were capable of delivering highly controlled filling behavior. The latest systems to be developed employed (1) a naturally pressurized filling system and (2) the use of filters placed flush on the top of the runner to act as bubble diverters, together with (3) terminal spin traps. These novel filling systems demonstrated excellent performance in simulation, in agreement with practical experience of the capability (of the trident gate in particular) to produce, for the first time in the history of casting, defect-free castings on a routine basis.

The effects of gating system design on the tensile strength properties of cast Al-Mg-Si alloy component were studied, with gating sprue diameters of 10 mm and 12 mm respectively for pressurized and non-pressurized systems. A match plate pattern was made for channels and mould cavity preparation, while the pouring temperature is at 680 0 C maintained as the optimum temperature. The variation with respect to increasing ingate of 1 to 3 was observed, the resulting castings from the gating system were compared for tensile strength using instron tensile test machine. The non-pressurized system with reduced turbulence and increasing cross sectional area towards the mould cavity, had finally increased the tensile strength. The result shows that 2-ingate pressurized gating system with 10 mm sprue diameter designed type has improved tensile strength. While the non-pressurized system with reduced turbulence and increasing cross sectional area towards the mould cavity, had finally increase the tensile strength.
