People-centred care, also known as person-centred care, is an approach to care that focuses on the needs, preferences and expectations of the individual, enabling people and communities to participate in and take control of their own health (WHO, 2015).With this is mind, many international institutions, such as the International Council of Nurses and the Picker Institute Europe, explicitly support the need to foster a person-centred care model in healthcare systems (Bartz, 2010;Paparella, 2016). Despite there being no agreed definition (Ryan, 2022), common features can be found in the literature on the term, such as a focus on the needs of individuals (Ryan, 2022). Meanwhile, Paparella (2016) identifies involvement in decision-making, the provision of clear and understandable information, emotional support and empathy, support for self-care and respect for preferences as key components.
