Effectiveness of acupuncture combined mecobalamin in the treatment of elderly diabetic peripheral neuropathy

Abstract: Background: Although previous studies have reported the effectiveness of acupuncture combined mecobalamin (AM) in the treatment of elderly diabetic peripheral neuropathy (EDPN), no systematic study has assessed its effectiveness and safety. Thus, this study will evaluate the effectiveness and safety of AM for the treatment of patients with EDPN. Methods: Bibliographic electronic databases will be searched as follows: Cochrane Library, PUBMED, EMBASE, CI… Show more

“…Methylcobalamin is a commonly used drug for the treatment of diabetic foot. It is a methylated vitamin B 12 , which is widely distributed in peripheral nerves and can be transported to nerve cells to stimulate the synthesis of lecithin and axonal pulp proteins by transmethylation, repair myelin, and accelerate the regeneration of damaged axons, thus regulating nerve conduction speed and relieving patients' symptoms [ 9 ]. It has also been pointed out that mecobalamin is an endogenous B 12 , which can participate in the carbon unit cycle and has an important role in the homocysteine synthesis protein acid transmethylation reaction, and is extremely suitable for lower limb neuropathy [ 10 ].…”

“…However, there are few guidelines on improving nerve conduction. Some studies have proposed the use of neurotrophic agents such as mecobalamin and lipoic acid, but the clinical effect still need to be debated [12][13][14]. Therefore, some thought that treatment of DPN is limited [15] Nursing technique can assist clinical treatment to promote health, maintain health, and prevent disease.…”
