Effectiveness of acute in‐hospital occupational therapy for older patients with hip fracture

Abstract: Aim To test the hypothesis that hip fracture patients who receive occupational therapy (OT) have better functional ability than those who do not. Methods This retrospective observational study utilized data from the Japan Rehabilitation Database spanning 2005–2015. In‐hospital hip fracture patients admitted to acute hospitals were identified. In total, 1266 patients were eligible based on the exclusion criteria. The primary outcome was motor Functional Independence Measure (FIM) efficiency. Results Patients wh… Show more

“…There is growing research showing that occupational therapy interventions are effective for people with health conditions across the life course, decreasing health care utilization (Rogers et al, 2017), improving the ability to complete daily life activities independently or with reduced assistance (Aghajanzade et al, 2019;Ahn, 2019;Burgess & Jensen, 2019;Uruma et al, 2019), and increasing quality of life (Levasseur et al, 2019;Yang et al, 2020).…”

“…Patients and physicians have pursued more aggressive and ambitious objectives, such as returning patients to their prefracture ADL level and previous social settings, while the classical goals of HFS were to reduce mortality and refracture after hip fracture. However, the implementation rate of occupational therapy after HFS is not high [ 85 ]. Occupational therapy is often determined not by the preferences of patients but by physicians’ preferences [ 85 ].…”
