BackgroundAutism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition which has posed a challenge to carers, pediatricians and dentists through the years. Over the last four decades, the disorder has been better understood and management techniques have evolved. In the field of dentistry, the autistic child presents difficulty in management, even for the simplest dental procedures. A comprehensive understanding of other psychoeducational and behavioral approaches to manage autism is very important. This article aims to introduce various important key techniques such as Applied Behavior Analysis, TEACCH, Sensory Adapted Dental Environment, Picture Exchange Communication System, and Animal Assisted Therapy and analyze their application in dentistry.MethodsA search of literature was carried out in Clinicaltrials.gov, Medline and Scopus with the search terms “Applied Behavior Analysis,” “TEACCH,” “Sensory Adapted Dental Environment,” “Picture Exchange Communication System,” and “Animal Assisted Therapy” along with “autism OR autistic,” “dental OR dentistry OR oral health.” After the screening for inclusion and exclusion criteria, 10 eligible articles were included, in English, published within the last 10 years.ResultsLimited research was available regarding these lesser‐known behavioral approaches in dentistry. The few that were available showed encouraging results. The different techniques proved useful in increasing acceptance of dental treatment and reducing behavioral disturbances. The patients experienced reduced dental anxiety, lesser discomfort, improved communication, and knowledge.ConclusionPediatric and special care dentists are likely to benefit by incorporating the recommended comprehensive behavior management techniques in their practice. There is evidence that these techniques will reduce behavioral disturbances in autistic children thereby making primary dental care possible without the need for sedation or general anesthesia.

Background: The prevalence of autism is 6 per 1000 people, usually seen before a child is 3 years old. The main characteristics of autism are related to problems of social interaction with others, disturbances in communication, repetitive, behavioral repetition, and cognitive instability. Purpose: To analyze the relationship between the mother's behavior with autistic children in terms of DMF-T values and dental care needs. Methods: This study is observational analytic by using cross-sectional research design. Data collection was obtained from the filling out of the HU-DBI (Hiroshima University -Dental Behavioral Inventory) questionnaire. Results: After analyzing the results of the study, it is known that the significance value (p) is> 0.05, so there is no correlation between mother's behavior and DMF-T / dmf-t value (DMF-T score) both in terms of knowledge, attitudes, Practice and correlations with dental care needs. Conclusion: the results of research that has been done shows that there is no significant relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and practice in maintaining oral health with caries index and care needs in children with autism.

Telehealth-Delivered Supports for Daily Living Skills for Autistic Children: a Systematic Review

The global prevalence of autism has increased markedly in recent years, resulting in a surge in demand for services. Telehealth interventions offer an alternative to traditional service delivery, however, research is needed to examine the effectiveness of telehealth-delivered interventions for daily living skills (DLS; e.g., sleeping, eating, personal hygiene). This review summarized and appraised 17 studies investigating the effectiveness and social validity of telehealth-delivered behavioral interventions (TDBIs) for DLS for autistic children. Most interventions were parent-implemented with clinician coaching via synchronous video coaching. Web-based resources and workbooks were standard features of interventions. TDBIs resulted in improved DLS for autistic children, however, a limited number of studies and lack of methodological rigor limit the conclusions that can be drawn. Avenues for future research are suggested.
