Effectiveness of Controlled-Release Formulations of MCH for Preventing Douglas-Fir Beetle (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) Infestation in Felled Trees

Abstract: Can. Ent. 109: 10.57-1062Ent. 109: 10.57- (1977. The effect of density on host-parasite interactions between Hypera postica (Gyllenhal) and Bathyplectes anurus (Thomson) was studied in a caged system in the laboratory. There was no significant relationship between proportion of hosts parasitized and host density. The frequency distribution of the parasite's eggs approximated the Poisson distribution in 83% of the cases. There was a quadratic relationship between number of superparasitized hosts and parasite d… Show more

“…Both MCH and verbenone have been field tested with promising results (Furniss et al, 1977;McGregor et al, 1984;Amman et al, 1989;Lindgren et al, 1989a,b) and have proved particularly useful in preventing the build-up of beetles on isolated windblown trees. Typical dosages range from 80 to 150g ha.…”

“…However, a negative correlation has been found between the attacks of these two species on the same host tree. Presumably, a "repellent kairomonal" effect is acting to separate these competetive species (FURNISS et al 1977).…”

“…In 1975, FURNISS et al (546) carried out a series of tests with several controlled-release formulations of MCH on 11 m x 43 m plots, each containing a single felled Douglas-fir tree. Attack density and brood density were significantly reduced by some of the MCH treatments.…”
