Effectiveness of Lumbopelvic Exercise in Colon Cancer Survivors

Abstract: An 8-wk program based on stabilization exercises is a promising strategy to increase health-related fitness and to reduce waist circumference in CCS. An exercise program based on lumbopelvic exercise is a feasible intervention to improve the control of deep abdominal muscles and health-related fitness.

“…Only one trial (5%, [ 47 ]) included patients with metastatic (stage IV) disease. Four trials (21%) evaluated the role of exercise pre-surgery [ 38 , 40 , 42 , 44 ], five (26%) were during chemotherapy [ 37 , 41 , 43 , 47 , 54 ] and 10 (53%) were post-treatment [ 36 , 39 , 45 , 46 , 48 53 ].…”

“…Home-based, unsupervised exercise was prescribed for 10 (53%) of the interventions [ 36 , 40 42 , 44 46 , 48 , 49 , 53 ]. Eight trials ( n = 8 [42%]) involved supervised interventions (i.e., over half of the exercise sessions involved face-to-face supervision [ 38 , 39 , 43 , 47 , 50 52 , 54 ], and one trial ( n = 1, 5%) involved a supervised and an unsupervised intervention group [ 37 ]. Supervised interventions were conducted at a range of facilities including hospital, clinical, university or rehabilitation settings.…”

“…In addition, most studies in cancer patients have been conducted with a rehabilitation team comprising nurses, psychologists and physiotherapists [8, 27]. For this reason, we chose to use a supervised face-to-face rehabilitation program conducted by an occupational therapist, due to the holistic and integrative approach of the discipline.…”

“…There is strong evidence about the efficacy and safety of exercise and healthy diet to improve the patients’ quality of life (QoL) [8, 9] and reduce the effects of cancer [10, 11]. Recent research reveals that even when patients know the benefits of interventions aimed at promoting energy balance among cancer survivors (in terms of intake and physical activity), it is unrealistic to expect that most of them, who have a strong sedentary habit, will comply with the current good practice guidelines [10, 12].…”
