Effectiveness of virtual laboratory vs. paper-based experiences to the hands-on chemistry practical in Tanzanian secondary schools

Abstract: Science subjects at pre-tertiary and tertiary education levels are important for socio-economic and industrial development of any country; however, they are difficult for students to construct their concepts. In Tanzania, insufficient or lack of practical experiments are major challenges for science subjects due to insufficient or lack of laboratories, apparatus, expertise or reagents. Thus, this research assesses the effectiveness of paper-based against virtual laboratory experiences towards improvement of re… Show more

“…Although not specifically focused on electrical engineering, these findings provide a basis for further exploration in more specific contexts. In line with this, [5] compared the application of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) and paper-based approaches in chemistry subjects. The results show an increase in students' practical skills and conceptual understanding.…”

“…However, Abidoye, Ahmed and Olorundare [1] suggests that the integration of ICT as a pedagogical tool is indispensable for addressing the challenge of teaching and learning science subjects in secondary schools. Manyilizu [22] supports that schools need to invest in ICT to enhance the teaching and learning of science subjects, especially practical sessions. Among the suggested ICT applications include designed science virtual laboratories and software simulations that can offer students meaningful learning of different concepts, principles and practical [6].…”

“…Arguably, the current state of science education in Tanzania necessitates ICT integration in teaching and learning. It is established in the literature that the use of ICTs in science teaching and learning develops understanding and visualisation of complex science concepts among learners [8,22]. Similarly, Papadakis et al [30] add that well-designed educational technology interventions can maximise learning outcomes.…”

“…Practice session in engineering education is crucial for learners to comprehend theoretical knowledge. Practice experience is an important method that enables the learner to gain in technical strength [18,25,29,31]. The learners need to manipulate the complicated equipment and their application tools to implement the relevant experiments.…”
