Effects of 14-weeks betaine supplementation on pro-inflammatory cytokines and hematology status in professional youth soccer players during a competition season: a double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial

Abstract: Objective Systemic elevations in pro-inflammatory cytokines are a marker of non-functional over reaching, and betaine has been shown to reduce the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines in vitro. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of betaine supplementation on tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukins-1 beta (IL-1β), − 6 (IL-6) and the complete blood cell (CBC) count in professional youth soccer players during a competitive season. Metho… Show more

“…However, the pro-inflammatory pathway may be activated, in eccentric exercise protocols [ 11 , 12 ]. Therefore, optimal exercise protocol should be used for athletes and sedentary people to improve outcomes and prevent musculoskeletal damages, cardiovascular, neurological, and endocrinological side effects [ 13 , 14 ].…”

“…For example, decreased levels of irisin, a skeletal muscle cell-derived myokine, are related to reduced lung function [27]. Irisin secretion was found to be linked to physical activity in a previous study.…”

“…Myokines are implicated in the autocrine regulation of metabolism in muscles as well as in the para/endocrine regulation of other tissues and organs including the adipose tissue, liver, and brain and lung through their receptors “muscle–lung cross-talk”. For example, decreased levels of irisin, a skeletal muscle cell-derived myokine, are related to reduced lung function [ 27 ]. Irisin secretion was found to be linked to physical activity in a previous study.…”

“…All the players went to the laboratory after 12 h of fasting, and 2 days after the last training session of the team, at eight o'clock in the morning. As in the previous study process (Nobari et al, 2021c ), 10 cc of blood was first taken from the antecubital vein of the players by a qualified phlebotomist. The collected samples were immediately centrifuged, and their serum was removed.…”
