This narrative review aimed to elucidate which robot-related characteristics predict relationship formation between typically-developing children and social robots in terms of closeness and trust. Moreover, we wanted to know to what extent relationship formation can be explained by children's experiential and cognitive states during interaction with a robot. We reviewed 86 journal articles and conference proceedings published between 2000 and 2017. In terms of predictors, robots' responsiveness and role, as well as strategic and emotional interaction between robot and child, increased closeness between the child and the robot. Findings about whether robot features predict children's trust in robots were inconsistent. In terms of children's experiential and cognitive states during interaction with a robot, robot characteristics and interaction styles were associated with two experiential states: engagement and enjoyment/liking. The literature hardly addressed the impact of experiential and cognitive states on closeness and trust. Comparisons of children's interactions with robots, adults, and objects showed that robots are perceived as neither animate nor inanimate, and that they are entities with whom children will likely form social relationships. Younger children experienced more enjoyment, were less sensitive to a robot's interaction style, and were more prone to anthropomorphic tendencies and effects than older children. Tailoring a robot's sex to that of a child mainly appealed to boys.

Summary Virtual and physical embodiments of interactive artificial agents utilize similar core technologies for perception, planning, and interaction and engage with people in similar ways. Thus, designers have typically considered these embodiments to be broadly interchangeable, and the choice of embodiment primarily depends on the practical demands of an application. This paper makes the case that virtual and physical embodiments elicit fundamentally different “frames of mind” in the users of the technology and follow different metaphors for interaction, resulting in diverging expectations, forms of engagement, and eventually interaction outcomes. It illustrates these differences through the lens of five key mechanisms: “situativity, interactivity, agency, proxemics, and believability”. It also outlines the design implications of the two frames of mind, arguing for different domains of interaction serving as appropriate context for virtual and physical embodiments.

Double-meaning agreements by two robots to conceal incoherent agreements to user's opinions

In conversations between people and social robots, it is important that robots show agreements to user's opinions from the aspect of building relationships. However, robot's agreements are often incoherent to user's opinions due to speech recognition failures. This paper proposes a new approach called double-meaning agreement to conceal the incoherence. In this approach, we exploit an interaction protocol by two robots. The interaction protocol makes an agreement that has a double meaning and enables a user to interpret robot's incoherent agreement as coherent. To evaluate effects of double-meaning agreement, we conducted an experiment. The results showed that participants who talked with two robots using double-meaning agreement had better feelings of being understood by the robots than those who talked with one robot without double-meaning agreement. These findings will contribute to developing social robots to keep a conversation coherent and to build social relationships.
