Effects of a method of self-supervision for counselor trainees.

Abstract: The authors tested the application of self-regulation and goal theory to self-supervision using a replicated, randomized multiple baseline (MBL) design. Specifically, 4 female novice counselor trainees were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 MBL conditions (self-supervision targeting the use of metaphor first and then empathy, self-supervision targeting empathy and then metaphor, or an attention placebo control) to test the effects of self-supervision on trainees' use of empathy and metaphor across counseling session… Show more

“…By the time a mental health professional is licensed for independent practice, she or he should have both the ability and the will to self-supervise (Dennin & Ellis, 2003): to be able to engage in the intentional acts of seeking and using feedback. Farr (1993) described the work setting as an "information environment" (p. 164) in which a person has available a range of information that can be useful to him or her about his or her level of performance.…”

“…In particular, structured self-training can encourage greater awareness, self-reflection, and self-critique (Munson, 1983) and can enhance supervisor-facilitated training and provide for more effective use of training time (Bernstein & LeComte, 1979;Morrissette, 1999;Munson, 1983). Three empirical studies have shown the effectiveness of selftraining (Altekruse & Brown, 1969;Dennin & Ellis, 2003;Hector et al, 1979).…”

“…The proposed model puts forward different techniques of self-observation and selfevaluation, crucial elements for self-supervision as they have been described by Dennin and Ellis (2003). Allowing for a creative process the supervisee moves in and out of conscious and unconscious, active and receptive states (Meekums, 1999), mixing techniques such as moving, writing, and subsequently reading and observing.…”

“…Supervision, despite being seen as essential to clinical practice by all the relevant professional associations it is not always available for all professionals (Dennin and Ellis, 2003) all of the time. Either no useful supervisor is on hand at the time, or else supervision is replaced by what may be called more accurately "administration" -reporting periodically on the job rather than focussing on specific difficulties encountered in dealing with clients (Yager, 1987).…”
