Effects of a new compatibilizer system on the flexural properties of wood–polyethylene composites

Abstract: A novel wood-plastic compatibilizer system containing a paper wet-strength agent as a wood-binding domain and stearic anhydride as a polyethylene (PE) binding domain was investigated. Treatment of wood flour with a commercial paper wet-strength agent Kymene ® 557H (simply called Kymene) before the mixing of PE and the wood flour increased the modulus of rupture (MOR) and the modulus of elasticity (MOE) of the resulting wood-PE composites. Addition of stearic acid in the mixing of PE and the wood-Kymene mixture… Show more

“…The mechanical properties of all composites were improved by the addition of binder. Many studies have shown that adding binders improves the bending modulus of composites (Geng and Simonsen 2004;Zhang et al 2007). Figure 2 shows that the bending strength of the composite decreased with the addition of wheat straw fiber, whereas the addition of paper mill sludge improved the bending strength.…”

“…First patented application of WPC was to manufacture of automotive interior substrates using extruded polypropylene and wood flour [1,7–8]. After this Italian patent, other companies started to produce various shapes of automotive parts by extruding polypropylene and wood flour mixtures.…”

“…After this Italian patent, other companies started to produce various shapes of automotive parts by extruding polypropylene and wood flour mixtures. In recent times, WPCs have found other application areas including siding, fencing, window frames and decking [1,712] by using polypropylene as well as high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as matrix resins.…”

“…Many scientists have already proposed compatibilizers replacing MAPO. The results in literature [9,10] suggest that derivatives of natural products might be promising for WPLC. So, we focused on cellulose, which is a major component of wood, synthesized cellulose esters of several carboxylic acids [11], such as acetate (C2C of DS 2.8), propionate (C3C), butyrate (C4C), valerate (C5C), capurorate (C6C), and laurate (C12C), and examined their abilities for compatibilizer of WPLC.…”
