Effects of Abscisic Acid and Nitric Oxide on Chilling Resistance and Activation of the Antioxidant System in Walnut Shoots In Vitro

Abstract: The roles of abscisic acid (ABA) and nitric oxide (NO) and the relationship between NO and ABA on chilling resistance and activation of antioxidant activities in walnut (Juglans regia) shoots in vitro under chilling stress were investigated. Walnut shoots were treated with ABA, the NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP), ABA in combination with the NO scavenger 2-phenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (PTIO), PTIO, SNP in combination with the ABA biosynthesis inhi… Show more

“…These results suggested reversely that NO could mediate the protective effects of ABA. The results were consistent with those of previous reports . Moreover, the increased NO content in ABA‐treated peach during cold storage was inhibited by the NO scavenger or ABA synthesis inhibitor sodium tungstate (Fig.…”

“…For example, exogenous ABA can improve the antioxidant capacity and photosynthesis of grape leaves to alleviate cold stress, as well as increase chilling resistance of zucchini . Although ABA is generally regarded as a key regulator of many abiotic stresses, the mechanism of plant stress on abiotic reactions is not completely controlled by ABA signaling . Under ambient pressure conditions, other endogenous signaling substances can interact with ABA.…”

“…The concentrations of NO, ABA, and c‐PTIO were selected based on previous studies . Sodium tungstate, l ‐NAME, and fluridone were also selected based on previous reports . The preparation of NO solutions was made as previously reported .…”

“…NO can act as a mediator of ABA signaling during the induction of stomatal closure and antioxidant defense . In plants, ABA can also trigger the production of endogenous NO . NO is also involved in the ABA‐delayed senescence of cut roses by maintaining moisture and antioxidant enzyme activity .…”
