Effects of Acute Exposure to Endosulfan (Organochlorine Pesticides) on Hematology of African Mud Catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822)

Abstract: Changes in the blood parameters of fingerlings of Clarias gariepinus were investigated after 24 and 96-h of exposures to endosulfan. 180 fingerlings of C. gariepinus [mean weight (10.5±1.3 g); total length (11.2±1.2 cm)] were exposed to five different concentrations (1.00, 2.20, 4.80, 11.00, 23.00 µg/L) of endosulfan and a control for 96 h after being acclimatized for 21 days. After 24 h of exposure, microcytic hypochromic anemia was observed and all erythrocyte profiles tested showed significant variation (p<… Show more

“…The substantial increment in leukocyte count in the current investigation may be attributed to general immune response and a defensive response of CYP. According to (Ndimele et al, 2015), hemoglobin, red blood cells, MCV and MCHC decreased significantly while WBC and Thrombocyte increased in Clarias gariepinus as a result of acute exposure to Endosulfan. Similarly, hematological examination reported by (Kavitha et al, 2012) revealed a significant reduction in Hb, HCT, RBC and MCHC levels in fish exposed to Moringa oleifera seed extract.…”

“…The African sharptooth catfish, C. gariepinus is a highly economical and ecologically relevant fish species [26]. It belongs to the family Clariidae and is a common model fish species utilized for aquatic toxicological studies among other animal experimental studies in Nigeria [27][28][29][30]. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sublethal (environmentally relevant) concentrations of two pesticides (dichlorvos and paraquat) in C. gariepinus for 28 days.…”

“…Information about the hematological characteristics is an imperative tool that can be used as a sensitive and effective index to check the pathophysiological variations in fish and exposure to pollutants, i.e., insecticides/herbicides can change hematological parameters such as eosinophils [ 10 , 19 , 39 , 57 ]. The data of the present study showed a significant ( P < 0.05) increase in erythrocyte and leukocyte counts, hematocrit, hemoglobin, and erythrocytic indices in exposed groups with pendimethalin as compared to the corresponding values recorded in the control group, and this might be due to the presence of greater amounts of herbicides in water which may have exerted a greater and more lasting effect on the hematological profile of fish [ 58 ]. This could also be due to hemoconcentration and polycythemia and attributable to a reduction in the amount of oxygen dissolved in water.…”
