Effects of alendronate on the peri‐implant bone in rats

Abstract: Three approaches were utilized in evaluating the effects of alendronate. It appears serum osteocalcin levels may serve as an adjuvant marker for this purpose, although further studies are required to confirm this.

“…Thus, anti-resorptive medications, such as sodium alendronate, have been effective in this treatment 1 , 4 , 7 , 14 , 20 . Apparently, according to previous studies 7 , 11 , 12 , 19 , 28 , sodium alendronate is also able to improve bone repair at the bone/implant interface under osteoporosis conditions, at least at the beginning of the bone tissue evaluation.…”

“…The role of estrogen in bone integrity maintenance has been recognized for a while, although estrogen therapy shows several non-skeletal, adverse effects, including vascular events and breast carcinoma 5 . Some drugs act by decreasing bone resorption and therefore delaying bone loss rate (antiresorptive therapy), such as bisphosphonates, calcitonin and the human monoclonal antibody, denosumab, or by promoting bone formation (anabolic therapy), such as teriparatide 1 , 3 , 14 , 18 , 19 , 28 .…”

“…On comparison between both groups, significant difference (<0.05) in the radiographic bone levels on mesial and distal aspect of implants were observed only at 3 and 9 months, respectively, which represents the effectiveness of sodium alendronate in enhancing the bone formation. These results were in accordance with the results by Veena and Prasad,[ 10 ] Oh et al .,[ 11 ] and Zuffeti et al . [ 1 ]…”

“…An experimental study in mice was performed to determine whether alendronate (100 mg/ml, 0.5 ml/kg) can affect the bone to the peri-implant area and may be a risk factor for the survival and success of the implant in rat maxillae. After computed tomography, histological JRPMS examination and biochemical analysis, the results showed non-statistically significant results in the first two analyses, while biochemical analysis showed a significant difference in the serum osteocalcin concentration, an indicator that could be used in the future for this purpose 17 .…”
