Effects of an Enriched Extract of Paeoniflorin, a Monoterpene Glycoside used in Chinese Herbal Medicine, on Cholesterol Metabolism in a Hyperlipidemic Rat Model

Abstract: BackgroundPaeoniflorin is a monoterpene glycoside extracted from the roots of Paeonia lactiflora and is used in Chinese herbal medicine to treat hyperlipidemia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of an enriched extract of paeoniflorin on cholesterol levels, hemodynamics, and oxidative stress in a hyperlipidemic rat model.Material/MethodsMale Sprague-Dawley rats were fed high-cholesterol diets and treated with three different doses of paeoniflorin for 12 weeks. The effects of paeoniflorin treatme… Show more

“…e mixture was separated from 10% SDS-PAGE gel and transferred to PVDF membrane (Bio-Rad, USA) for 1 hour. e membrane was sealed in 5% skim milk powder dissolved in TBST for 2 hours [21]. en, the membrane was incubated overnight with anti-HPRT1 (1 : 1,000), PDZK1 (1 : 1,000), and GAPDH (1 : 8,000) antibodies at 4°C.…”

“…7 A, there were seven major components in NXT identified as HSYA, PF, FA, CG, RA, Sal B, and Tan IIA, respectively. Among them, PF has vasodilatory and inhibitory effects on myocardial infarction and atherosclerosis [ 32 ]; Sal B can promote blood vessel growth, improve blood flow as well as prevent atherosclerosis [ 33 ]. The myocardial protective activity of PF and Sal B was investigated in TFD-induced zebrafish cardiomyopathy model by phenotypic examination (Additional file 4 : Fig.…”

“…Paeoniae Radix extract contains 5% paeoniflorin, the most important component that suppresses high glucose-induced retinal microglial matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) expression and inflammation by reducing capillary permeability [35]. Paeoniflorin also exerts a neuroprotective effect on inflammation and apoptosis in Alzheimer's disease and regulates hepatic cholesterol synthesis and metabolism by reducing oxidative stress [36,37].…”
