Effects of an Induced Molt and Shell Quality on the Physical Dimensions and Mineral Composition of Eggs and Intrauterine pH ,

Abstract: The relationship between force-molting and egg shell quality on the physical dimensions, water vapor conductance, air pore characteristics, and shell mineral content of eggs was investigated in Experiment 1. Hard-shelled (HS) and soft-shelled (SS) eggs were collected at 0700 or 1100 hr from force-molted and nommolted hens between 95 and 99 weeks of age. For Experiment 2, intrauterine pH was measured in vivo, immediately following the oviposition of a HS, SS, or shell-less (SL) egg by 107-week-old force-molted … Show more

“…In the traditional method, the eggshell minerals are measured by crushing eggshells and using specialized spectrometry ( Klingensmith and Hester, 1985 ; Drabik et al, 2021 ). The mineral concentrations of individual regions were impossible to measure using traditional methods, which is very important because each region of the eggshell has its specific role in keeping an eggshell strong and hatchable.…”

“…When older birds are subjected to an induced moult causing egg production to cease for 4-6 weeks, both productivity (Berry and Brake, 1987) and the shell quality improves following the rest period (Klingensmith and Hester, 1985;Zimmermann et ul., 1987). It appears that the induced pause has an effect on the mechanisms of calcium transport and/or metabolism.…”
