This paper addresses a design optimization of a gas turbine (GT) for marine applications. A gain-scheduling method incorporating a meta-heuristic optimization is proposed to optimize a thermodynamics-based model of a small GT engine. A comprehensive control system consisting of a proportional integral (PI) controller with additional proportional gains, gain scheduling, and a min-max controller is developed. The modeling of gains as a function of plant variables is presented. Meta-heuristic optimizations, namely a genetic algorithm (GA) and a whale optimization algorithm (WOA), are applied to optimize the designed control system. The results show that the WOA has better performance than that of the GA, where the WOA exhibits the minimum fitness value. Compared to the unoptimized gain, the time to reach the target of the power lever angle is significantly reduced. Optimal gain scheduling shows a stable response compared with a fixed gain, which can have oscillation effects as a controller responds. An effect of using bioethanol as a fuel has been observed. It shows that for the same input parameters of the GT dynamics model, the fuel flow increases significantly, as compared with diesel fuel, because of its low bioethanol heating value. Thus, a significant increase occurs only at the gain and depends on the fuel flow.

Bioenergetic Cultures: Estimate of Oil Content in Macaw Palm via Computer Vision

Macaw palm (Acrocomia aculeata) is a potential raw material for biodiesel production owing to its high oil content. In this study, a model is created that can estimate the oil percentage in Macaw fruit using spectral indices obtained via computer vision. Ninety Macaw fruits are used to perform an experiment. They are categorized into three stages of maturation and counted in terms of weeks after flowering. Images of the fruits are captured using a multispectral camera in the visible spectral region (RGB) and infra-red regions (NIR), which allows spectral indices to be obtained. A model is established using the principal component regression method and used to estimate the oil content based on the colorimetric characteristics of Macaw palm fruits. The selected model is composed of the first two principal components, which indicate an explanatory potency of 91.57% of the variance. Applying this information to the validation data, the model exhibits a determination coefficient of 0.91, mean square error of 10.61%, and standard error of 5.46% in terms of the oil content, which indicates that computer vision is a promising alternative method for estimating oil content.

Activity and Selectivity of Mesoporous Silica Catalyst for Hydrocracking Process of Used Palm Oil into Biogasoline

Research on the synthesis of mesoporous silica catalyst, as well as its activity and selectivity in the hydrocracking of used palm oil, has been carried out. The research involved the preparation of mesoporous silica catalyst by varying the volume ratio of TEOS:CTAB at 2:1, 4:1, and 8:1, then calcined at 500 °C. Synthesis success was confirmed by FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDX, GSA, and hydrocracking selectivity by GC-MS analysis. The results showed that the more TEOS added, the silica bond composition, crystallinity, pore size, and product selectivity increased. The best catalyst performance was obtained from a TEOS:CTAB ratio of 8:1 at a calcination temperature of 500 °C (MCT81-500), which indicated the presence of Si-OH and Si-O-Si groups with a Si percentage of 45.31%, pore size diameter of 31.912 nm, and a total pore volume of 0.040 cc/g. In addition, the application of MCT81-500 in the hydrocracking process of used palm oil can produce a bio-gasoline (C5-C12) and kerosene (C12-C15) of 92.24 and 7.76 wt.%, respectively. This study shows that mesoporous silica has good potential for catalytic activity to convert used cooking oil waste into an environmentally friendly energy source.
