Effects of clinical mastitis on reproductive and milk performance of Holstein cows in Morocco

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the influence of clinical mastitis and time of first mastitis occurrence on reproductive and milk performance of Holstein cows. Data were collected in a dairy farm from 2008 to 2012 on 1725 cows, among which 464 cows with mastitis. To determine the influence of clinical mastitis on reproductive and milk performance, models included fixed effects of parity, calving season, calving year, and group (cows with and with no mastitis). To determine the effect of time of 1st mast… Show more

“…In general agreement with this finding, the prevalence of SCM has been estimated to be 36.7% in Poland [ 54 ], 46.4% in Brazil [ 12 ], 48.8% in Tanzania [ 53 ] and 50.4% in Rwanda [ 34 ]. The prevalence of intramammary infection tends to differ greatly from farm to farm and country to country [ 10 , 11 , 14 , 29 , 56 ]. Discrepancies in the incidence of mastitis may be attributed to differences in animal breeds, management systems, and/or husbandry.…”

“…[2] who reported an altered estrus interval in cows affected with mastitis. Later on, several researchers reported adverse effects of mastitis on reproduction based on retrospective data [3-6]. Higher incidence of embryonic loss or abortion in CM affected cows has also been reported [7,8].…”

“…The incidence rate of mastitis has been reported to be 25-60% worldwide (Ruegg. 2003;Sadeghi-Sefidmazgi et al, 2010;Boujenane et al, 2015;Elhaig and Selim, 2015), while China usually has a relatively higher rate (Zhou et al, 2013;Yang et al, 2015). Direct selection for resistance to clinical mastitis may be very difficult; however, indirect selection has been practiced widely, typically using indices like milk somatic cell score (SCS) as indicators of resistance to mastitis (Shook.…”
