Effects of corrective, therapeutic exercise techniques on adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. A systematic review

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of corrective, therapeutic exercise techniques on subjects with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. A systematic review was conducted by searching the Cochrane Library Plus, Pubmed, PEDro, and SCOPUS databases. Studies in patients diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis that considered corrective, therapeutic exercise as an independent outcome measure and symptoms, functional capacity, Cobb's angle and/or other angles or body asymmetries as dependent… Show more

“…CONTRAIS comprises braces, scoliosis-specific exercises, MT, and electrical stimulation. Interestingly, very positive results of CONTRAIS have been reported ( Ceballos Laita et al, 2018 ; Zhou et al, 2021 ). However, nonsurgical interventions for AIS are controversial ( Day et al, 2019 ; Fan et al, 2020 ).…”

“…physical therapy (PT) consists of individually coordinated exercises for the patient in a center dedicated to the treatment of scoliosis. PT has potential benefits for treating physiological and psychological aspects of patients with AIS ( Ceballos Laita et al, 2018 ; Zhou et al, 2021 ). Conservative interventions in adolescents with IS remain controversial ( Anthony et al, 2021 ; Bettany-Saltikov et al, 2017 ).…”

“…The aim of exercise therapy is to correct muscular imbalance. However, excessive and inappropriate exercise without a precise radiographic diagnosis and physical assessment may interrupt treatment and worsen the condition [ 10 ]. Schroth rehabilitation exercises (SRE) provide stable outcomes and high patient satisfaction [ 11 , 12 ].…”

“…Idiopathic scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine in the three planes of space, characterized by rotation of the vertebrae and lateral deviation of the spine; radiographically, scoliosis is defined as a Cobb angle greater than 10° on X-ray of the spine, a universally used diagnostic criterion since 1948 [ 1 , 2 ].…”

“…Its prevalence is between 1 and 2% in school age, up to the age of 15, with a higher incidence in women [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. Idiopathic scoliosis has no known cause and is divided into 3 groups based on the age of onset: infant (0–3 years), juvenile (4–10 years) and adolescent (AIS) (10–19 years) [ 1 , 2 ]. About 80% of scoliosis cases are AIS, thus defined for the adolescent age range which, according to the WHO, is from 10 to 19 years, with a prevalence of 3% in the general population [ 6 , 7 ].…”
