Effects of Daily Activities on Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry Measurements of Body Composition in Active People

Abstract: Having a standardized scanning protocol and fasted subjects is the most practical way to minimize measurement errors. Future studies involving DXA in measuring body composition should report their scanning and analysis protocol with their associated typical errors of measurement so that the level of reliability can be assessed.

“…Players wore their playing boots when undertaking the speed, agility and endurance assessments, which occurred outdoor on a 3G pitch. Due to the effects of hydration status of body composition measures using DXA (29), all DXA scans were undertaken prior to the Yo-Yo test, whereby sweat losses were inevitable. All other tests would likely have a limited effect on fluid balance.…”

“…A total body scan was selected as this has been shown to provide the identification of osteoporosis at numerous skeletal sites and data on body composition (Melton et al, 2005). All participants were scanned according to Australian Institute of Sport best practice protocols for a total body scan (Nana, Slater, Hopkins, & Burke, 2012). Before conducting the full study, a pilot study was conducted to determine the reliability of data collection and analysis of the DXA scans.…”

“…Studies on the influence of daily activities, meal ingestion, and acute exercise on body composition estimates have already been performed in healthy controls (Horber, Thomi, Casez, Fonteille, & Jaeger, 1992) and more recently on athletes (Nana, Slater, Hopkins, & Burke, 2013;Nana, Slater, Hopkins, & Burke, 2011). Furthermore, previous work has not compared DXA estimates with skinfolds/impedance analysis outcomes following an acute fluid deficit.…”
