Effects of Dietary Selenium Supplementation on Intestinal Barrier and Immune Responses Associated with Its Modulation of Gut Microbiota

Abstract: Variations in selenium (Se) intake have been reported to affect the barrier function and immune responses in the gut. Previous studies mainly focused on the role of Se itself or its metabolites, while the influences of the Se-intake-related microbiota on gut health were not thoroughly studied. This study compared the effects of different dietary Se supplementation (Sedeficient, Se-adequate, and Se-supranutritional) on the gut microbiota of mice. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) was further conducted to b… Show more

“…The ability of selenium to enhance immunity is not just determined by its direct action on the host, but also through its effects in the microbiome, that will increase or decrease the susceptibility to infections provoked by specific microorganisms (Zhai et al . 2018 ). A limited number of detailed studies have evaluated the effect of selenium supplementation on the gut microbiome of fish (Kousha, Yeganeh and Amirkolaie 2019 ; Victor et al .…”

“…To date, no research has investigated these interactions in any insect species. Much less is known about the effects of selenium on gut microbial communities, but subtle alterations in these microbe populations have been revealed by previous studies performed under conditions of exposure to selenium ions in mice (45,46) and through our work with bumble bees (35). In light of the effects of toxicant exposure on the microbiome, research is now being conducted on the ability of this microbial community to protect its host against environmental exposures.…”
