Effects of different high alkyl methacrylate monomers on tensile bond strength between resilient liner and acrylic resin

Abstract: In the present study, tensile bond strength between an acrylic resin and a resilient denture liner, Molloplast B, was studied. To enhance the bonding capacity between these materials, acrylic resin surface was modified using ethyl methacrylate, iso-butyl methacrylate or tert-butyl methacrylate monomers. Changes on the modified surfaces were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance. Only the modifications by isobutyl methacrylate application appeared to have an i… Show more

“…Moreover, application of chemical agents possessing solvent effects on the acrylic resin can cause the formation of roughened surfaces, and this in turn, positively affects the strength of the bond. FTIR is important for determination of the secondary interactions and study of molecular structure 12. However, FTIR analysis could not be performed on the specimens, because the soft structure of the liner prevents getting samples from it for analysis.…”

“…A reliable bond between denture bases and soft liner is required for the denture to function properly. Therefore, researchers have attempted to identify other methods to improve the PMMA/resilient liner bond 4,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16. In the dental literature, the difficulty of obtaining a reliable bond between soft relining materials and PMMA denture base polymers has often been discussed 17.…”

“…The resilient denture liners are indicated for the restoration of inflamed support tissues, severe bone resorptions and low resilience mucosa because of their damping effect and by providing increased prosthesis stability [1][2][3][4] . These materials are classified as resin-based soft liner and silicone-based soft liner 3 and are composed by monomers and polymers associated with plasticizers 5,6 which provide softness to the relining material and comfort to the patient 7 .…”

“…Some union agents, i.e. primers, are developed to prevent these failures because of their interaction with the surface of acrylic resin and the resilient liners 1,2 . It has been speculated that, although fabricated for silicone-based soft liner, the organic solvents present in primers composition may improve the adhesion between these materials [12][13][14] .…”
