Effects of different inoculum densities of Trichoderma harzianum and Trichoderma viride against Meloidogyne javanica on tomato

Abstract: A greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of different inoculum densities of two Saudi isolates of Trichoderma harzianum and Trichoderma viride against Meloidogyne javanica on tomato. Four densities (10(4), 10(6), 10(8) and 10(10) spores/g of soil) of each fungus were used. The results indicate that all four inoculum densities of the two Trichoderma species suppressed the nematode reproduction and root galling; and increased the growth of tomato plants, compared to controls. Efficacy of bot… Show more

“…Interestingly, most of the isolates that exhibited high inhibition rate of nematode growth also improved each root length, plant height, roots fresh weight, shoots fresh, and dry weight of tomato plants (Table 4). These results are compatible with other studies showing the ability of Trichoderma in growth inhibition of nematode on various crops and enhancing the growth of host plants (Al-Hazmi and Javeed, 2016;Izuogu and Abiri, 2015;Sharon et al, 2011;Mascarin et al, 2012).…”

“…The isolates Th2, Ta2, Th3 and TI were the most efficient isolates in suppression growth of M. phaseolina Previous studies explained that T. harzianum is more vigorous in inhibition growth of pathogenic fungi than the other species of Trichoderma (Abdel-lateif et al, 2017;Shoaib et al, 2018;Al-Hazmi and Javeed, 2016).…”

“…They found its efficiency in promoting the death of juveniles, as well as the parasitism capacity of the eggs by the Trichoderma isolates. The efficiency of these fungi, including T. harzianum, for the biological control of nematodes has been previously demonstrated in different patosystems (Affokpon et al, 2011;Freitas et al, 2012;Al-Hazmi & Tariq Javeed, 2016;Kath et al, 2017).…”

“…Moreover, the Trichoderma species can act as biological control agents, in particular against nematodes of the genus Meloidogyne Sokhandani et al, 2016), by producing enzymes and secondary metabolites (Bhattacharjee and Dey, 2014), which inhibit egg hatching and immobilize second stage juveniles (J 2 ) of the nematode (Feyisa et al, 2015). The capacity to control populations of root phytopathogens is associated with the origin of the fungus, with the compatible interaction of the host plants and the edaphic conditions of their location (Affokpon et al, 2011;Al-Hazmi and TariqJaveed, 2016).…”
