Quasiparticies of superconda~ctors can be manipulated either by irradiation or tunnel injection such that substantial changes of the gap (order parameter) occur which are most pronounced close to the transition temperature. These phenomena are investigated by a theory which is based on the combined system of the Boltzmann equation and the BCS gap equation. Several stationary, spatially homogeneous states are found in some range of temperatures. A linear stability analysis reveals two types of behavior, depending, essentially, on whether quasiparticle diffusion increases or decreases the stability. In a representative situation of the first type, two states turn out to be locally stable. An investigation of a nonlinear equation of motion for the order parameter leads to the conclusion that a first-order phase transition between these two states occurs at a g~!ven temperature. In a situation of the second type, one finds that fluctuations of a definite wave vector destroy the spatially homogeneous state and lead to a stable state of layered structure.

The photoexcited state in superconducting metals and alloys was studied via pump-probe spectroscopy. A pulsed Ti:sapphire laser was used to create the non-equilibrium state and the far-infrared pulses of a synchrotron storage ring, to which the laser is synchronized, measured the changes in the material optical properties. Both the time-and frequency-dependent photoinduced spectra of Pb, Nb, NbN, Nb0.5Ti0.5N, and Pb0.75Bi0.25 superconducting thin films were measured in the low-fluence regime. The time dependent data establish the regions where the relaxation rate is dominated either by the phonon escape time (phonon bottleneck effect) or by the intrinsic quasiparticle recombination time. The photoinduced spectra measure directly the reduction of the superconducting gap due to an excess number of quasiparticles created by the short laser pulses. This gap shift allows us to establish the temperature range over which the low fluence approximation is valid.

Quasiparticle recombination time in superconducting tin and normal electronic density of states at the fermi surface from tunnel junction experiments

We have measured the temperature dependence of the effective quasiparticle recombination time in superconducting tin tunnel junctions by current and laser pulse excitation. The experimental times show satisfactory agreement with calculations based on the ray acoustic lifetime model of Eisenmenger et al. taking into account the film thickness dependence of the phonon reabsorption, 2A-phonon volume loss processes and phonon transmission from the junction into the substrate and liquid helium. On the basis of the BCS density of thermally excited quasiparticles and simplified rate equations for quasiparticle recombination, and from the analysis of measurements of decaying excess quasiparticle concentrations we obtain a mean value N o =(2.73_+0.03) 1022 eV-1 cm-3 for the electronic density of states at the Fermi Surface in thin, evaporated tin films. This value differs less than 5 % from that obtained from the experimental electronic heatcapacity coefficient of the bulk material.
