Effects of egg yolk antibody against Porphyromonas gingivalis gingipains in periodontitis patients

Abstract: Porphyromonas gingivalis gingipains issuspected to be one of the most important causative agents of periodontitis. We postulated that the inhibition of gingipains may reduce the pathogenic nature of P. gingivalis. Anti-P. gingivalis egg yolk antibody (IgY-GP) was isolated from the yolks of hens immunized with purified gingipains. We applied IgY-GP gel subgingivally in periodontitis patients who harbored P. gingivalis in their subgingival flora. Five pairs of contralateral anterior single-rooted teeth were sele… Show more

“…27 Human clinical studies on the efficacy of prophylactic IgY therapy have primarily targeted gastrointestinal infections. Oral pathogens causing dental caries, 28 periodontitis 29 and oral candidiasis 30 have been successfully reduced with pathogen-specific IgY. Infectious diseases caused by important gastrointestinal pathogens like Helicobacter pylori 31 and rotavirus 32 are diminished clinically with oral passive IgY immunotherapy.…”

“…In addition to these advantages, a chicken can provide more than 40 g IgY per year (15). Thus far, numerous studies on IgY used for immunotherapy in clinical and experimental treatments have been reported (16)(17)(18)(19)(20). However, poly-clonal antibodies, including IgY, are prone to cross-reactions and are of inconsistent quality.…”
