Although S. suis is a normal colonizer of the upper respiratory tract of healthy pigs, it can also cause respiratory tract infections as well as serious invasive diseases such as meningitis, septicaemia, endocarditis and sudden death (Staats, Feder, Okwumabua, & Chengappa, ; Zou et al., ).
