“…The enzyme response to pollutants shows a bell-shaped trend, with an initial increase in activity due to the activation of enzyme synthesis followed by a decrease in enzymatic activity, due to the enhanced catabolic rate and/or a direct inhibitory action of toxic chemicals on the enzyme molecules (Viarengo et al 2007). Thus, high CAT activities found in mussels and fish at polluted sites are considered an adaptive response to ROS-inducing contaminants (Roméo et al 2003;Cappello et al 2013;Jebali et al 2013) whereas low CAT activities at polluted sites are linked with increased susceptibility to oxidative stress (Regoli et al 2004;Pampanin et al 2005a;Oliva et al 2012). Accordingly, the low CAT activities observed in this 16 study in mussels collected from the impacted sites suggest oxidative stress experienced by these animals.…”

“…Among these established biomarkers, however, few of them have adequate sensitivity, specificity and predictability for metal pollution. With the rapid development ofomic techniques, researchers can carry out a global analysis on the molecules to obtain a set of biomarkers related to the biological effects induced by metal pollution, which facilitates the detection and prediction of metal pollution (Cappello et al, 2013;Knigge et al, 2004). Among these -omic techniques, proteomics can theoretically analyze all the proteins encoded by the given genome in an organism (Knigge et al, 2004).…”

“…And it has been also widely applied in multiple areas such as food quality (Tarachiwin et al, 2008), ecotoxicology (Jones et al, 2008) and plant sciences (Kim et al, 2010). Cappello et al (2013aCappello et al ( , 2013b identified the metabolic responses Hg and PAHs in mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis caged in anthropogenic-impacted sites along the Augusta coastline (Sicily, Italy) and confirmed these mussels had suffered from adverse environmental condition. To investigate the biological effects of heavy metal pollution, Kwon et al (2012) employed NMR-based metabolomics to compare the metabolic profiles in marine mussels (Mytilus edulis) sampled from a metal-polluted area (Onsan Bay) and a clean area (Dokdo area).…”

“…Although the traditional biochemical indices, such as lysosomal membrane stability and anti-oxidative enzyme activities, are usable to characterize the biological effects induced by metal pollutions, they lack the capability to perform a global test of a certain class of biological molecules that can be filtered for the biomarkers related to biological effects (Regoli, 2000;de Almeida et al, 2004;Rank et al, 2007;Cappello et al, 2013a). With the rapid development of system biology techniques including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics, researchers can carry out a global analysis on the molecules to obtain the biomarkers related to the biological effects induced by environmental stressors Santos et al, 2010;Williams et al, 2009).…”
