Effects of Erbium Family Laser on Shear Bond Strength of Composite to Dentin After Internal Bleaching

Abstract: Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of surface treatment with erbium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) and erbium, chromium: yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) lasers on shear bond strength of composite resin to recently bleached dentin. Methods: In this study, 40 extracted human premolars were selected. The teeth were cut 4 mm apical to the cusp tip and were randomly divided into four groups (n = 10 in each group) for shear bond strength testing. For bleaching, 35% hydrogen … Show more

“…Therefore, dentists should wait for a period of at least 2 weeks prior to bonding. [35][36][37] Overall, in-office bleaching protocol can improve the esthetics of the s-ACLs in a fast, time-efficient, and simple approach; however, it depends on the type and depth of staining involved. Therefore, it is essential to understand the stain history (nonmetallic and metallic) that contributes to the development of s-ACLs to reach an optimum bleaching outcome.…”

“… 11 12 13 21 In such a clinical scenario, dentists should take into consideration the effect of immediate bonding of composite resin restorations to the bleached surface. 35 36 37 38 39 40 As the residual oxygen from the bleaching agent would interfere with the resin polymerization and weaken the shear bonding strength, it may affect the longevity of the restoration. Therefore, dentists should wait for a period of at least 2 weeks prior to bonding.…”

“…Erbium family lasers including erbium-doped: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) and erbium-chromium; yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSSG) with two different wavelengths have been widely used for enamel surface conditioning in adhesive procedures. [27][28][29][30][31][32] The Er:YAG laser emits a wavelength of 2.94 μm and Er,Cr:YSSG laser emits a wavelength of 2.78 μm, which coincide with the maximum absorption in water and hydroxyapatite. For this reason, they can be used as an etching adhesive in the treatment of teeth enamel.…”

“…Internal dental bleaching is a conservative and cost-effective (Lee et al, 2004;Carrasco-Guerisoli et al, 2009;Zimmerli et al, 2010) method to improve esthetic outcomes. This technique represents an alternative to more invasive prosthondontic treatment of discolored non-vital teeth (Kiomarsi et al, 2018). The internal bleaching treatment it is useful because it is not an isolated treatment in the planning of patient care.…”
