Effects of Feeding Flax and Two Types of Sunflower Seeds on Fatty Acid Compositions of Yolk Lipid Classes

Abstract: Single Comb White Leghorn laying hens were fed diets high in oleic, linolenic, or linoleic acid prepared by incorporation of high oleic acid sunflower seed (HOAS), full-fat flax seed (FLAX), or regular high linoleic acid sunflower seed (HLAS), respectively, to investigate the effects of dietary fats on the fatty acid compositions of major lipid classes of chicken eggs. Egg production, Haugh units, specific gravity, and yolk total lipid content were measured. After 3 wk of feeding, the fatty acid compositions o… Show more

“…This result is consistent with other reports for broiler chicks (Phetteplace & Watkins, 1989;Olomu & Baracos, 1991a). Studies using whole flaxseed for poultry diets have shown that whole eggs and various tissues are enriched with n-3 PUFAs derived from dietary α-linolenic acid (C18:3n-3) (Caston & Leeson, 1990;Cherian & Sim, 1991;Jiang et al, 1991). Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (C22:6n-3) can be retroconverted to eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) (C20:5n-3) which is normally present only in trace amounts in the tissue lipids.…”

“…Os efeitos da linhaça sobre a produção de ovos de poedeiras alimentadas por quatro semanas, foram avaliados por Jiang et al (1991a) que não encontraram efeitos da linhaça sobre a produção de ovos ou sobre o peso dos ovos durante o experimento. No entanto, Scheideler & Froning (1996) relataram aumento na taxa de postura de poedeiras alimentadas com rações contendo óleo de linhaça.…”

“…The results of the present trial are in agreement with those of Aymond & Van Elswyk (2005), who reported a decrease in egg production when layers were fed 15% linseed. On the other hand, Jiang et al (1991), Caston et al (1994), and Bean & Leeson (2003) showed that feeding up to 10% linseed to the hens did not effect egg production. Scheideler & Froning (1996) reported a decrease in feed intake when hens were fed linseed, as found in the present study.…”
