Effects of Flow Rate and pH on Calcium Phosphate Saturation in Human Parotid Saliva

Abstract: Human parotid saliva collected at flow rates ranging from 0.1 to 2.0 ml/ min was analyzed for ionized calcium and inorganic phosphate concentrations, pH and total ionic strength. Calculations showed that the saliva was supersaturated with respect to hydroxyapatite (HAP) and β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) and unsaturated with respect to dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) at all flow rates.
